Come learn how software from the Linux Terminal Server Project enables you to drive the cost of computing down so low that you can afford to put ten times the number of computers into each classroom without increasing your budget or staff. Come learn how you can easily get to the magic tipping point of three students (or fewer!) per computer in the classroom, enabling your teachers to teach WITH the computers, not just about the computers.

We'll be talking about K12LTSP, a version of Linux made for schools, built by educators for educators. It's based on RedHat Linux and it's easy to install and configure. It's distributed under the GNU General Public License. That means it's free and it's Open Source software. K12LTSP lets you boot diskless workstations, complete with graphical interfaces, from the terminal server. You can use old PC's as diskless clients or buy new ones for less than $150 each.

All applications run on the terminal server. Workstations are "thin." They have no software or hard drives. Thin-clients are perfect for schools because they are easy to install and require little maintenance. They are reliable and immune to malicious tampering and viruses.
